Like other networks that continue to withstand the challenges of the writers‘ strike, ABC has made some changes in its schedule, shuffling the dates for the premiere of Cashmere Mafia, and new episodes Brothers & Sisters and Ugly Betty, which begins its first-run episodes on January 10. Rob Lowe, who plays senator Robert McCallister on Brothers & Sisters, has filed three lawsuits last Monday against two of his former nannies and a former chef, accusing them of breach of contract, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress.In the case of one nanny, Lowe has actually aired his grievances on The Huffington Post.  She is reportedly demanding $1.5 million from the actor and his wife Sheryl or she will engage in a scheme to hurt the couple by spreading “malicious lies.” Read more »

Last night’s second season finale of Brothers and Sisters provided many reminders of the show’s greatness. The Scotty-Kevin wedding was sweet and romantic with just a dash of silliness thrown in. There were revelatory confessions, secrets and lies exposed, but unfortunately, there was also a little bit of very creepy romance.Brothers and Sisters doesn’t get quite as much credit as it probably deserves. Every week brings a solidly entertaining episode. Viewers get to laugh and cry right along with those wacky Walkers, undoubtedly one of the most screwed-up and fun to watch families in TV history. ABC, the number two network in all the land (and only behind FOX because of the Super Bowl and American Idol), had its upfront presentation early this morning.  The network unveiled its Fall schedule, and it‘s pretty hard to get excited about it.  Nothing against ABC – the schedule is good, probably the best, top to bottom, of any network – it‘s just that there weren‘t many openings this time around.  Last season ABC launched eight new shows in the Fall, the most of any network.  For the most part, ABC hit a homerun with Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, Samantha Who?, and Eli Stone in the mid-season.Networks rarely have so many returning second-year shows.  Because of this, ABC had very little work to do this pilot season.  There are only two new shows on the Fall schedule, with two more targeted for the mid-season.  Continue reading for a detailed description of the schedule and new shows. Read more »

After claiming that Peter Clements had the nerve to have sex on their bed with third parties and throw parties when the family was out of town, Rob Lowe and wife Sheryl have decided to drop the defamation lawsuit against their former chef. We still have two months before the return of the award-winning ABC drama Brothers & Sisters, but the show—and some of its actors—are getting attention from different sides of the spectrum.The gay rights organization Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has applauded ABC for its portrayal of gay characters on its television shows.  Among the big free-TV networks, ABC got the highest score in the organization‘s second GLAAD Network Responsibility Index, powered by programs such as Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty.  Brothers & Sisters was praised in particular, for portraying the first gay marriage on television. Read more »

Earlier this month, a controversy involving the 33-year-old Balthazar Getty and 26-year-old Sienna Miller sparked after paparazzi took photos of the two while in a vacation in Italy.  While it all seemed like an innocent rendezvous, photos showed the married Getty and the topless Miller in more than just a friendly get-together.  In fact, one photo showed the two kissing, while another showed Miller and Getty on the beach in a more than comfortable embrace.While the media was quick to label Getty as guilty of infidelity towards his wife of eight years, Rosetta Gillington, Getty claims that he has been physically separated from Rosetta for a long time now and just began dating Miller in May this year. Read more »

Looks like award-winning actress Sally Field is getting away from all those messy controversies.  Field is choosing to devote her time to more worthy causes these days, unlike some of her co-stars in the ABC drama Brothers & Sisters, for example, Balthazar Getty and Matthew Rhys getting entangled in all those Sienna Miller photos and what not.The acclaimed actress, who has received multiple awards throughout her 40-year career—including two Oscars and three Emmys—has signed on to join a one-hour television special about cancer.  Stand Up to Cancer, a telethon that aims to raise awareness about, and funds for, cancer prevention, is slated to air on September 5 at 8pm on ABC, CBS and NBC. Read more »

Last week, the 33-year-old star of Brothers and Sisters, Matthew Rhys, headed back to his homeland in Wales to tend to some cultural festivities.  The actor, who stars as the gay lawyer Kevin Walker in the ABC dramedy, recently headed home to take part in an event sponsored by the National Youth Arts Wales, in which Rhys narrated the first Welsh translation of Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff.  The National Youth Orchestra of Wales was conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes."As a former member of the National Youth Theatre of Wales, Matthew appreciates the value of providing young people with first class training and performing opportunities that can truly influence them and their future life and career choices," Pauline Crossly, representative for NYAW, told Wales Online.  "It’s great that he wants to give something back to a system that set him on his way." Read more »

The Screen Actors’ Guild has been surrounded by controversy as a dissident group formed to raise the issue about the Membership First, the Hollywood-based political group in the Screen Actors Guild that holds a fair majority on the national board.  Membership First came to power in 2005, and since then has been blamed for weakly negotiating and further discrediting the American Federation of Television and Radio (AFTRA) , which recently signed a three-year contract with the studios."We think the current leadership has put SAG on a dangerous path," veteran actor Ned Vaughn said last month.  The dissident group, aptly named Unite for Strength, is currently aiming to fill 11 seats in the national board, whose elections will be held come September.  The candidates who are part of the said group include Private Practice’s Kate Walsh and Amy Brennenman, Desperate Housewives’ Doug Savant, and Chicago Hope’s Adam Arkin. Read more »

The missing Walker sibling has finally been found, and Ryan Lafferty will arrive later in the season at last.  On Brothers & Sisters, the family has been hunting for William Walker‘s unaccounted for child.  Now, in the series‘ third season, he‘ll finally make an appearance.  According to E! Unfortunately, the Walkers won‘t be marching into the small screen tonight on ABC.  Instead of the usual hour of Brothers & Sisters, audiences will get to witness the 2008 American Music Awards.  Despite that, the show remains up and running, thanks to the writers of the series.  Beth Schwartz and Brian Studler, who were responsible for last week‘s “Going Once…Going Twice” episode, sat down for an interview and discussed the recent events on the hit show.  Asked about their experiences writing episodes, Schwartz said: “It was actually very easy. Today the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation released its nominees for the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Aside from the usual television nominees like The L Word and Ugly Betty, there was one atypical nominee: Supernatural.The GLAAD Media Awards have a special category for an individual episode of a show that doesn‘t feature a regular gay character. Supernatural was nominated for “Ghostfacers,” the faux reality TV series episode that featured intern Corbett (current 90210 jock Dustin Milligan) who had a gay infatuation with Ed, resulting in the classic line, “Ed, you have to go be gay for that poor dead intern.” Read more »

Calista Flockhart, who plays Kitty on the ABC drama Brothers and Sisters, and husband Harrison Ford are in the process of adopting a little girl, according to US reports.  The move is expected to extend the couple‘s already big family. Flockhart, 44, has one adopted son, eight-year-old Liam, and Ford, 66, has four other children from two previous marriages.  He also plans to make Liam his own child.The two have been together for seven years, and Ford proposed to the former Ally McBeal actress on Valentine‘s Day. Read more »

Balthazar Getty returned to Brothers and Sisters on last night‘s finale, but the family had to go to should-be swine flu-ridden Mexico to find him.  They tried to reach out to Tommy, who consequently wasn‘t very keen on accepting their help. Elsewhere on that episode, Robert (Rob Lowe)and Kitty (Calista Flockhart) encountered a crossroad in their marriage, and it wasn‘t clear if they were going to go out of it unscathed.  As for Justin (Dave Annable), she tried making plans for the future, with or without Rebecca (Emily VanCamp). Remember that Nora (Sally Field) thought Tommy was in a cult, and as expected of the Walkers, everyone has to come running to see what‘s going on.We previously reported that the actress who plays Julia, who was growing impatient for Tommy‘s return, recently confirmed that she shifted from full-time cast member to recurring guest star status.  For her part, Sarah Jane Morris is happy for the step her character took, as Julia is finally making a choice for himself. In the last episode of Brothers & Sisters, Kitty wanted to have a low-key baby shower, without any party games or extravagant gifts, but things didn‘t exactly go that way, thanks to Nora and Sarah.  There were some funny moments, too, courtesy of the gay men who were not so surprisingly invited to the shower. Also, she got an offer from her alma mater to start up a new university department on broadcast journalism, which is only her dream job, but she considered that the baby might be a factor soon.  Of course, Robert wanted her to take the job (because he was a little guilty that she should make the sacrifices he wasn‘t willing to make), but Sarah sort of implied that babies tend to be huge work.  Finally, she decided that the baby was definitely more important than her career.  This was the central dilemma in the last episode, the classic career versus family variety.  The moment Kitty finally decided to have a baby, her dream job came knocking. Read more »

With the year dangerously close to ending, ABC presents its last episode of Brothers and Sisters for 2008.  Not to fret though, as we can all look forward to four fresh episodes next year.  But meanwhile, we have a preview of tonight‘s program.  Written by David Marshall Grant and Molly Newman, the new installment of the series is titled “Just a Sliver.”It‘s Thanksgiving in the Walker family home, but they‘re not celebrating it together.  Nora (Sally Field) is disappointed that everyone is going their separate ways for the holidays this year.  It‘s only she and Sarah (Rachael Griffiths) who are left alone for the occasion.  However, troubling circumstances seem to pull the Walkers back in, as an emergency threatens their Thanksgiving. Read more »

After a riveting “Tug of War” on Brothers and Sisters last week, the series returns this time focusing on the chaotic events in a garage sale.  On “Everything Must Go,” the Walker family tries to deal with Nora’s decision to start anew by getting rid of the old.  Thinking of establishing a new charity venture, Nora (Sally Field) believes it’s time to make a clean sweep of William’s belongings.  She opens up a garage sale, hoping that everything that reminds her of her late husband would be taken away.  There’s just too much junk stored in the home, as well as in the family’s memories.  Read more »
