The Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and there were sometruly out-of-the-box nominees.  Sarah Silverman for Lead Actress in aComedy for her Comedy Central show?  Flight of the Conchords for ComedySeries and Jemaine Clement for Lead Actor?  Simon Baker from TheMentalist?  And Family Guy for Outstanding Comedy Series?  Yeah, thesearen‘t your daddy‘s Emmys.

A lot is made of the overwhelming number of great leading roles forwomen on cable, but if the official Emmy ballots are any indication,women are still a minority when it comes to starring TV roles.  On theofficial ballot sent to Emmy voters, there are 70 contenders forOutstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but only 48 for the LeadActress category.

As we approach the May 31 finale of the stinging AMC black dramedy Breaking Bad, Aaron Paul, who plays Jesse Pinkman, the intense junior partner of Bryan Cranston‘s chemistry teacher cum meth producer Walter White, says they have great "chemistry together," pun slightly intended.

When we left off the AMC dark dramedy Breaking Bad, Walter (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) were having difficulties trying to come up with the large amount of meth they promised to Tuco (Raymond Cruz), a sociopath drug kingpin who eventually became the two‘s distributor.  Walter, of course, is the high school chemistry teacher who, after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, turned to making meth to support his family.

Last Thursday the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences unveiled the comedy and drama series up for Primetime Emmy nominations. Though those lists were made public, the nominations in the acting categories have been kept secret – though Gold Derby‘s Tom O‘Neil has tapped his sources and sifted through rumors to provide the unofficial top 10 lists of who made the cut.
