If I could make one suggestion to Grey’s Anatomy, it would be to stop blatantly making the storylines of the patients at Seattle Grace mirror the lives of the doctors who are taking care of them. Meredith worries about moving in with Derek and meets a woman in her 60s who decides that she got bored with marriage and cheated with her best friend’s husband. Cue Meredith’s freakout. Izzie gets angry with Meredith over a silly comment she made to Alex but they witness two old friends making amends, they apologize to one another too. Alex tries hard not to let his “nice guy” side show but he can’t help but assist a woman who has run out of health care coverage. Coincidence? At this point, I think not…

Grey's Anatomy started its fifth season with a bang last night. So far, I'm down with the addition of Kevin McKidd as Major McHottie to the cast. He's a welcome relief from all those milquetoast male types that Shonda Rhimes likes to write, but I'm a little bit nervous that she might steer him too far toward the other end of the male macho continuum and make him too stereotypically manly.
Each of the men on Grey's Anatomy seems to fulfill a single stereotype emanating from Shonda's brain, which leads me to wonder: does Shonda Rhimes even know any men?

Grey's Anatomy begins with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) standing in her house of candles that she made for McDreamy. She is ready to begin her fairytale life with Derek, her "happily ever after," but she voiceovers that happily ever after doesn't happen. We cut to her rushing to the hospital where Derek is dying on an operating table after being hit by a bus. She screams and cries, but suddenly, we find out that it was all just a dream. Real-life Meredith jumps up from a nap in the on-call room, as her voiceover curses the person who invented "happily ever after." She rushes to a computer where Bailey, Derek, Hahn and the residents are all hovering. The national rankings for teaching hospitals is about to be released, and everyone is on edge to find out where Seattle Grace landed this year. Everyone is shocked and saddened to learn that they fell down to number 12 in the rankings, behind Cleveland Clinic of all places.

On Thursday night, Grey’s Anatomy finally returns for its 5th season with a 2 hour premiere. Things have changed though, for the residents of Seattle Grace since we saw them last. "We ended last season with the end of the fairy tale," series creator Shonda Rhimes said in a recent interview. "I always thought this season was about what happens after the `happily ever after,' for all our characters." Several promos have been airing for the new season of Grey’s and based on the quick, flashing images during them, and some helpful internet rumors, I’ve been able to decipher some new things to look forward to on the new season of Grey’s Anatomy!

While watching the Emmys this past Sunday, I couldn't help but feel disappointed when the list of nominees for Best Actress in a Drama Series were announced. Some of the actresses were more than worthy of their nominations, but the category didn't acknowledge amazing performances from people like January Jones (Mad Men), Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), or Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica). How do you hand out an award for dramatic acting without considering three of the most talented ladies on television?
One of these women may have a shot at a trophy next year, but probably not for the series she's most known for. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Mary McDonnell has signed on for a multi-episode arc on Grey's Anatomy, which is full of Emmy-nominated actors.

Grey's Anatomy's fifth season will be starting very, very soon with an intense, two-hour season premiere. It's been a very long summer without Grey's Anatomy to keep us company on Thursday nights, but starting next week, we'll finally be sated.
I've already previewed this episode for you. A few things that will happen: Derek and Meredith will be struggling to achieve their happily ever after; there will be a freak ice storm in Seattle that will bring trauma patients to the hospital; and Kevin McKidd will show up at Seattle Grace as a military surgeon. But great news! I've just come across some bona fide clips and spoilers that I'm sure you'll enjoy.
Mild spoilers ahead. Do not read on if you don't like spoilers.

It has already been announced that Kevin McKidd, formerly of Journeyman, will be making hearts go pitter-patter on Grey's Anatomy. He'll be playing a military doctor, Major Owen Hunt, who'll catch the eye of our favorite robotic resident, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh).
In more Grey's Anatomy casting news, EW's Michael Ausiello reported last week that Janina Gavankar, recently of The L Word, will be joining the cast of Grey's Anatomy as an intern, and Brandon Scott (Cold Case) will also be checking into Seattle Grace Hospital as a junior McDreamy.
