The Screen Actors’ Guild has been surrounded by controversy as a dissident group formed to raise the issue about the Membership First, the Hollywood-based political group in the Screen Actors Guild that holds a fair majority on the national board. Membership First came to power in 2005, and since then has been blamed for weakly negotiating and further discrediting the American Federation of Television and Radio (AFTRA) , which recently signed a three-year contract with the studios.
"We think the current leadership has put SAG on a dangerous path," veteran actor Ned Vaughn said last month. The dissident group, aptly named Unite for Strength, is currently aiming to fill 11 seats in the national board, whose elections will be held come September. The candidates who are part of the said group include Private Practice’s Kate Walsh and Amy Brennenman, Desperate Housewives’ Doug Savant, and Chicago Hope’s Adam Arkin.

Last week, the 33-year-old star of Brothers and Sisters, Matthew Rhys, headed back to his homeland in Wales to tend to some cultural festivities. The actor, who stars as the gay lawyer Kevin Walker in the ABC dramedy, recently headed home to take part in an event sponsored by the National Youth Arts Wales, in which Rhys narrated the first Welsh translation of Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff. The National Youth Orchestra of Wales was conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes.
"As a former member of the National Youth Theatre of Wales, Matthew appreciates the value of providing young people with first class training and performing opportunities that can truly influence them and their future life and career choices," Pauline Crossly, representative for NYAW, told Wales Online. "It’s great that he wants to give something back to a system that set him on his way."

Looks like award-winning actress Sally Field is getting away from all those messy controversies. Field is choosing to devote her time to more worthy causes these days, unlike some of her co-stars in the ABC drama Brothers & Sisters, for example, Balthazar Getty and Matthew Rhys getting entangled in all those Sienna Miller photos and what not.
The acclaimed actress, who has received multiple awards throughout her 40-year career—including two Oscars and three Emmys—has signed on to join a one-hour television special about cancer. Stand Up to Cancer, a telethon that aims to raise awareness about, and funds for, cancer prevention, is slated to air on September 5 at 8pm on ABC, CBS and NBC.

Earlier this month, a controversy involving the 33-year-old Balthazar Getty and 26-year-old Sienna Miller sparked after paparazzi took photos of the two while in a vacation in Italy. While it all seemed like an innocent rendezvous, photos showed the married Getty and the topless Miller in more than just a friendly get-together. In fact, one photo showed the two kissing, while another showed Miller and Getty on the beach in a more than comfortable embrace.
While the media was quick to label Getty as guilty of infidelity towards his wife of eight years, Rosetta Gillington, Getty claims that he has been physically separated from Rosetta for a long time now and just began dating Miller in May this year.

We still have two months before the return of the award-winning ABC drama Brothers & Sisters, but the show—and some of its actors—are getting attention from different sides of the spectrum.
The gay rights organization Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has applauded ABC for its portrayal of gay characters on its television shows. Among the big free-TV networks, ABC got the highest score in the organization's second GLAAD Network Responsibility Index, powered by programs such as Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty. Brothers & Sisters was praised in particular, for portraying the first gay marriage on television.
