Michael Scott (Steve Carell) is the Regional Manager of the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin on the television series, "The Office." Michael considers the people who work in the office his family, as he has no other family in his life. Michael often tries to be funny, which usually results in disaster. He is quick to make an insulting jab at someone but cannot handle it well when someone does the same to him. Though he is not an ideal boss, most people in the office put up with him because he is very hands off and lets them get away with quite a bit, occasionally playing a part in pranks himself.
Michael was originally a salesman at Dunder Mifflin, but was promoted to Regional Manager because of his high skill in sales. Though he was a good salesman, he cannot handle his subordinates very well as he is always trying to be their friend. He considers Jim Halpert (John Krasinki) to be his best friend, and he frequently butts into his personal life. Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) originally considered himself to be the Assistant Regional Manager, though Michael reminded him he was Assistant to the Regional Manager, an unofficial title as Dwight is the top salesman in the company. Michael also has a hatred for Toby Flenderson (Paul Lieberstein), the company human resources representative, mainly stemming from the fact that Michael has no authority over him as he is directly employed by corporate headquarters.
Michael has very little luck with women and often puts his foot in his mouth on dates. One time, his date, Jan Levenson (Melora Hardin), got drunk and kissed him. He considered this to be making out and made repeated advances towards her, which she rejected because she was his direct supervisor. He kissed her once again after saving her job. However, he also became involved with his real estate agent, Carol (Nancy Walls), around the same time as Jan. After the incident with Carol, Jan became more hostile towards Michael, even threatening to close his branch. They got back together but had a toxic relationship which ended in a fight and Jan moving to Arizona.
After Toby left Scranton, Holly Flax (Amy Ryan) was hired to be the HR rep. She shared the same sense of humor and silliness that Michael did, and they had a natural attraction to each other. They began to date, and Michael finally found someone who understood him. When news of their relationship got out, Holly was transferred out of the branch. She began dating someone else, but Michael looked on her computer and saw she was still interested in him. In a phone call, she said that Michael romanticized their relationship, but he said that wasn't true and that it wasn't just a fling and he thinks about her all the time.
"Toby has been cruisin' for a bruisin' for twelve years and I am now his cruise director. And my name is Captain Bruisin'."
"The Lincoln assassination just recently became funny... And I hope to someday live in a world where a person could tell a hilarious AIDS joke. Still one of my dreams."
"I love Phyllis. I think Phyllis is beautiful, and I am not afraid to let anyone know that. In fact, the only thing I am afraid of, is getting a boner."
