Jim Halpert (John Kasinski) is a paper salesman at the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin in the television series "The Office." Jim is initially not very invested in his job and does not consider it to be his career. He is one of the few people in the office that behaves in a manner that is close to normal. The other is the receptionist, Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer), whom Jim has a large crush on. Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) considers Jim to be his enemy and is often combative with him. Jim contributes to the combative relationship by playing pranks on Dwight, who he finds to be annoying and uptight. Despite not caring much about his job, Jim is one of the better salesmen in the branch.
Jim's crush on Pam could not go anywhere because she was engaged to Roy (David Denman). Pam seemed to reciprocate his feelings, but remained engaged, much to Jim's disappointment. Roy doesn't treat Pam very well and continually refuses to set a wedding date, which makes Jim wonder why they are together. With Pam's wedding finally set and only a short time away, Jim tells her he loves her and wants to be with her. She turns him down and later that night Jim kisses her in the office.
Despite the kiss and Pam calling off her wedding, Jim transfers to the Stamford branch because Pam did not seem to reciprocate the strong emotions he felt for her. There he met Karen (Rashida Jones) and they began dating. The Stamford branch closed soon after the transfer and he and Karen were offered jobs at Scranton, which they took. Jim was promoted to Assistant Regional Manager under Michael Scott (Steve Carell). This led to a rekindling of feelings between Jim and Pam and she eventually tells him that he is the reason she called off her wedding. Karen is threatened by his feelings for her and they eventually break up, leaving Jim and Pam free to date.
When Michael quits his job and is replaced, Jim finds himself unable to get on the good side of the new boss and feels like his job is in jeopardy. Michael eventually returns, restoring Jim to a sense of comfort and job security. During a company picnic, Pam hurts herself and is taken to a doctor. During the examination, Jim and Pam find out she is pregnant. Soon after this, Jim is promoted to Co-Regional Manager alongside Michael. Much to Jim's dismay, none of the employees consider him to have much authority. He returns to his position as salesman because the commissioned sales position pays more than the manager position. Jim and Pam get married at Niagara Falls and their daughter is born several months later.
"Dwight, this, fits in the palm of my hand. You haven't blown them up enough. Why have you chosen brown and gray balloons?"
"As ranking number two, I am starting the 'Committee to determine the validity of the two committees.' I am the sole member. The committee will act on this now."
"Since I have some pretty big long term plans in my personal life with Pam that I'd like her parents to be psyched about. So, I am about to do something very bold in this job that I've never done before: Try."
