"Smallville" chronicles Clark's life in the years before he becomes Superman while living with the Kents in Smallville. It begins with Clark as a freshman in high school and the tenth and final season shows Clark's transition into Superman and a member of the Justice League.
During Season 1, Clark tries to cope with his developing superhuman abilities. Because of his attempts to be a normal high school student, he struggles to keep his new abilities from his friends. As the show progresses, he learns that he was born on the planet Krypton and must come to terms with the destiny his real father Jor-El, has laid out for him. He also develops new abilities, like heat vision and x-ray vision and a vulnerability to meteor rock otherewise known as Kryptonite. Despite his alien identity, Clark is also seen as a typical high school student, playing football and falling in and out of love.
Clark has a long-term on-again/off-again relationship with Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk). Lana's parents were killed by the meteor shower that brought Clark to Earth and she was adopted by her Aunt Nell (Sarah-Jane Redmond). When he starts high school, Clark has a huge crush on Lana who is dating a popular football player Whitney Fordman (Eric Johnson). Clark and Lana start dating at the end of the second season but the relationship does not last and continues to be tumultuous. By Season 6, Clark is hurt by her relationship with Lex Luthor, which includes a wedding based on a fake pregnancy. In later seasons, they are reunited, but Lana eventually leaves Clark when she absorbs Kryptonite in order to save Metropolis.
In Season 1, Clark meets and befriends Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) who came to Smallville to manage his family's fertilizer plant. Over time, Clark's relationship with Lex deteriorates, as Lex battles with his father for control of LuthorCorp, marries and divorces Lana and purchases the Daily Planet in order to control the media. Lex's metamorphosis into a villain is also something that Clark has a difficult time accepting.
Clark gets engaged to Lois Lane (Erica Durance) in Season 10 and fights to protect the hero vigilantes of the world from the machinations of the military.

"All my life I've been afraid, Lois. Afraid of people knowing the truth about me. Afraid of them rejecting me, and even if they didn't, still losing them. I've been afraid of everything I can't control. But when I was faced with the idea of losing you forever..."
