Coming Out: Embracing LGBT Characters on TV

According to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), U.S. television shows are featuring record numbers of gay, bisexual and transgender characters. In a recent report by Reuters, GLAAD’s eighth annual report tracking gender and ethnic diversity on television concludes there are over 100 LGBT characters on American TV. This number includes leading, supporting and recurring characters on both broadcast and cable shows. The major networks and cable channels inclusive attitude regarding programming occurs at a time when gay rights are gaining more support countrywide. On election day, three more states legalized gay marriage, and Wisconsin voters put the first openly gay senator into office. To celebrate a more tolerant and historic time , we are taking a closer look at just a few of TV’s most compelling LGBT characters.
