Biography

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20, 1988 in Saint Michael, Barbados, Rihanna broke onto the music scene in 2005 and has since enjoyed whirlwind celebrity as a singer, model and fashion designer. She also proudly represents Barbados, and is the second artist, and first female artist from the country to have received a Grammy. Rihanna is currently signed to Jay-Z’s Def Jam label, and has released three albums through the company. She has attained five Billboard Hot 100 number ones thus far: “SOS”, “Umbrella”, “Take a Bow”, “Disturbia” and “Live Your Life.” Rihanna is the female solo artist with the most number ones in this decade, and her albums have sold over 11 million copies the world over.

Rihanna released her first album, Music of the Sun, in 2005. The album’s first single, “Pon de Replay,” reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her second album, A Girl Like Me, was released in 2006, less than a year after her first album was released. A string of highly successful singles, such as “SOS,” “We Ride,” and “Break It Off,” led to album sales of over 3.5 million copies worldwide. Never losing speed, in 2007 Rihanna recorded and released her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, which she worked on with several big name artists and producers, including Ne-Yo, Stargate, Timbaland, and Justin Timberlake. The album produced even more hit singles than the last, including “Don’t Stop the Music,” “Shut Up and Drive,” “Disturbia,” and the ever-popular “Umbrella.”

Rihanna is set to continue on to become one of the most successful and highest-selling female artists of the new millennium. Beyond their near-constant radio airplay, her songs have been featured on the soundtracks of many films and television series, including the new 90210, Veronica Mars, Gossip Girl, Bionic Woman, Entourage, and Dancing With the Stars.

Quotes

She said her favorite fashion designers are Zac Posen and Dsquared.

Rihanna says she had much more control over her new album “Good Girl Gone Bad” than she did in “A Girl Like Me”.

Rihanna: Beyonce just put the level of female entertainment all the way up there. She does acting, she has a beautiful voice and that’s really the person I look up to, that type of entertainer.

Rihanna: All my friends are guys. For some reason, I don’t get along really well with girls. I have three girlfriends and a million guy friends.

Rihanna: Nike’s a big brand, I love Nike, and for them to have me endorse their brand, that’s a big deal for me.

Rihanna: I like to be creative.

Rihanna: I feel like I’ve grown five years in just a year, and I really want to show people that.

Rihanna: I got excited when I first heard this track and three days later, it was recorded. On her first single SOS from her second abum.

Rihanna: On a lot of records, men talk about cheating as though it’s all a game. For me, Unfaithful is not just about stepping out on your man, but the pain that it causes both parties.
