Julian Baker (Austin Nichols) is Peyton's (Hilarie Burton) ex-boyfriend from Los Angeles. They met after she had just broken up with her high school boyfriend Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray). Julian is a movie producer who moved to Tree Hill to try to win back Peyton under the guise of producing a version of Lucas' (Chad Michael Murray) book. He develops a rocky relationship with Lucas in the beginning and makes advances on Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush). He felt a connection with Brooke after reading Lucas' book even though he came to Tree Hill to find Peyton.

When Julian arrives in town, Peyton does not tell Lucas that Julian is her ex-boyfriend. This leads to a fight between Lucas and Julian in which Julian is beat up badly. As Season 6 progresses, Lucas and Julian begin to bond while producing the film. Meanwhile, Julian realizes that he will never win back Peyton and shows an interest in Brooke. At first Brooke does not share her feelings with Julian as she has difficulty opening up her heart due to all the heartbreak she has faced in the past. After receiving Peyton's well wishes, she flies to Los Angeles to confess her true feelings to Julian. The confession is more than successful. Brooke and Julian's relationship blossoms and they eventually become engaged. In the meantime, Julian has produced a winning film.
