Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) on the television show "Lost, " wakes to discover that his plane, Flight 815, has crashed, stranding the survivors on what appears to be a deserted tropical island. Upon meeting fellow survivors Jack (Matthew Fox) and Kate (Evangeline Lily), Charlie discovers that everything is not as it seems on this island. Over the course of the next few weeks, the survivors encountered polar bears, a mysterious monster in the jungle, and a native race on the island known as "The Others". It is during this time that Charlie meets Claire (Emilie De Ravin), a pregnant survivor with whom he immediately connects.
Through the show's frequent flashbacks, it is learned that prior to the crash, Charlie was the former bass player of a rock band named "Drive Shaft" that he formed with his brother Liam (Neil Hopkins). The group was signed to a record deal and enjoyed immediate success but proved to be a one-hit wonder. As the band's popularity began to decline, Charlie and Liam turned to drugs, most specifically heroin. When Liam quit the band and entered rehab, Charlie began to spiral out of control. He eventually followed Liam to Australia and attempted to reform the group, but Liam refused, and instead tried to enter Charlie into a rehabilitation program. Upset, Charlie stormed off and took a cab to the airport where he boarded Flight 815 to Los Angeles. It is eventually revealed that just before the plane went down, Charlie was in the bathroom, trying to take more heroin.
Charlie's rampant drug habit immediately plays into his character as his initial time on the island is spent trying to overcome his addiction. Eventually, he is forced to choose between his guitar and his drugs, to which he chooses the former, therefore giving up his habit. He continued to struggle with his addiction for the remainder of his time on the series but was able to deny and ignore the temptation with the help of the other survivors. His ability to control his habit advanced his relationship with Claire, and the two began to outwardly show their feelings for each other. Charlie was also present when Claire gave birth to her baby, and began to serve as the child's father figure.
While it is revealed the crash of Flight 815 onto the island was pure chance, the mysterious forces at work on the island and the survivors' inability to leave it were not. Through interrogation of The Others, the survivors discovered that the island was being controlled by an underground facility, which blocks communications to and from the outside world. Charlie, acting on instinct, left the survivors and snuck onto the base, attempting to locate the beacon that disrupts communications. Charlie located the beacon guarded by Mikhail Bakunin (Andrew Divoff), a radical member of The Others. The two fought and as they struggled, Charlie shot Mikhail with a spear gun, apparently killing him. Charlie de-activated the beacon, allowing the survivors to establish communications with the outside world, but immediately afterwards Mikhail used a grenade to blow a hole in the wall, flooding the building. Charlie realizing that if the facility floods the island would be destroyed, seals himself inside the room and drowns.
"Hmm. I have this dream. I'm driving a bus, and my teeth start falling out. My mum is in the back, eating biscuits. Everything smells of bacon. It's weird. 'Course I don't wake up screaming..."
"You know when I used to get high, I'd watch nature programmes on the Beeb. Polar bears are meant to be quite clever, very clever. They're like the Einsteins of the bear community."
