Lauren Velez was born on November 2, 1964 in Brooklyn, New York. She is the twin sister of Loraine Velez who is also an actress. Lauren landed her first TV role as Nina Moreno in the television series New York Undercover. This was followed by other projects like I Like It Like That where she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award and The Desi Award for Best Lead Actress. Moreover, she became part of the suspense drama series Dexter as Maria LaGuerta.

Maria LaGuerta is a lieutenant who is very much fond of Dexter . Throughout the series, she flirts with him to his discomfort. She appears to be a very smart woman. In addition, she strongly dislikes Debra .

Lauren Velez was born on November 2, 1964 in Brooklyn, New York. She is the twin sister of fellow actress Loraine Velez, and their parents emigrated from Puerto Rico during the early 1950s. Their father worked as a police officer in the Big Apple, until he was able to afford a house in the middle-class neighborhood of Rockaway, Queens, moving there with his wife and his eight children. When they were younger, Velez and her twin sister enjoyed producing improvised skits and plays for their family’s enjoyment. The two of them also received scholarships later on to study at the Alvin Ailey Dancing School.

Dr. Gloria Nathan is portrayed by Lauren Velez in the HBO prison drama television series Oz. She is the designated chief physician of the titular correctional facility, and oversees the medical care provided to the inmates. She is a steady and upright person who constantly has to deal with conflict, whether from state medical boards, or from problematic foe Ryan O’Reily. Gloria attempts to remain calm in spite of the tense environment, and becomes involved briefly with Tim McManus. Her husband is murdered by Cyril O’Reily under orders from his brother, since Ryan has a growing obsession with her.
