Her nickname is “VanderV,” and has earned a second degree black belt in karate. She is also the third cousin of noted Canadian performer Gordon Pinsent, as well as having an older sister named Sarah. Vandervoort has also had strong interest in writing, and studied at York University where she majored in both English and Psychology. One of her chosen personal quotes is that “Hollywood is something imagined, acting is something crafted.” She began acting at the age of 13, putting on shows for her family and friends and soon taking classes to hone her talent.
Laura Vandervoort got her American film debut in the Disney Channel Original Movie Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire. It starred Caroline Rhea, Robert Carradine, Myles Jeffrey, Matt O’Leary and Jake Epstein. Her other television productions include roles in Are You Afraid of the Dark, three episodes of Goosebumps in the late 90s, Twice in a Lifetime, and The Gavin Crawford Show. In 2004, she was cast in Doc, as well as playing Sadie Harrison in numerous episodes of Instant Star. She has also appeared in The Dresden Files as Natalie, and played the character Miss Tangiers on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She also had a guest-starring role in the film Troubled Waters, and was in another Disney movie titled Alley Cats Strike. In 2006, she shot her first feature film with Jeff Daniels, The Lookout. It also starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Matthew Goode and Isla Fisher. She was eventually led to the CW network, landing the coveted role of Kara, or Supergirl in the series Smallville. The hit show allowed her to star opposite Tom Welling, and Vandervoort’s character became the focus of the show’s seventh season. Her character is the Kryptonian biological cousin of Clark Kent (Welling) and is the one sent to watch over him. Vandervoort continued her career, choosing to star in the sequel Into the Blue 2: The Reef starring Chris Carmack of The O.C. and Marsha Thomason of Lost.
