After he graduated, he began acting in a number of television series. He has played characters like Gordon Parker in Judging Amy, Tony in the King of Queens episode “Taste Buds,” and a Rastafarian cook on Monk. He was also seen on ER, City of Angels, Guys Like Us, and Noah’s Arc.
James Mathis III has also managed to achieve roles in films. Some of his credits are Paved with Good Intentions in 2006, and Smiley Face in 2007. Many of his work involves voicing characters. Some of these are for HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch. He has also worked on videogames, lending his voice in Metal Gear Solid 3, Ridge Racer 7, Ultimate Spider Man and Matrix: The Path of Neo. This is due to his fondness for videogames during his spare time. He also voiced an alien in the hit animated series Ben 10. After a role in Privacy Policy, he landed the part of Bruce on the VH1 television series I Hate My 30s. His character once suffered from obesity, but eventually managed to become buff and muscular after working out. However, he still lives in constant fear of gradually reverting back to his former fat girth. He's also been known to skip weddings in favor of poker games instead. In 2008, James Mathis III got a role in the direct-to-video film, The War of Game as an announcer.
Other than acting, he enjoys cooking, sports, and writing. He also stated that if he wasn’t working as an actor, he’d take on a job as a teacher.
