Born Trevor Stanley Rhodes on September 10, 1980, Trevor Murdoch began training in Central States Wrestling Alliance in 1997 and later moved to World League Wrestling and Harley Race's Wrestling Academy in 1999. By 2000, Murdoch was fighting for the WLW Heavyweight Championship, in which he defeated Meng (Tonga Fifita) for the title. He also fought in promotions Ohio Valley Wrestling and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.
In 2005, Murdoch joined WWE and teamed up with Lance Cade. Simply known as Cade and Murdoch, the two defeated World Tag Team Champions Hurricane and Rosey in a non-title match, thus earning a title match at Unforgiven 2005. They later won the World Tag Team Championship, but soon lost it to the Big Show and Kane at Taboo Tuesday 2005. By November, the tag team broke up and Murdoch began competing alone. He wrestled in singles competition on Heat, where he won most of his matches. He also appeared in Raw and had a short feud with the Heart Throbs, whom he defeated in singles action. He gained a spot in 2006 Royal Rumble but was not victorious.
In 2007, Cade and Murdoch began a feud with World Tag Team Champions The Hardys, whom they unsuccessfully fought at Backlash. The two teams then began an alliance, which was short-lived as Cade and Murdoch had a rematch with the Hardys at Judgement Day, when the Hardys again succeeded. In June 2007's Raw, Cade and Murdoch finally emerged victorious against the Hardys and became the two time World Tag Team Champions. They again faced the Hardys at Vengeance: Night of Champions, where Cade and Murdoch successfully defended their titles.
