Actor and stand-up comedian Sinbad was born as David Adkins on November 10, 1956. He is one of six siblings, and was educated at Benton Harbor High School. At that time, he became known for his participation in the marching band and the math club. He then moved to the University of Denver to continue his studies, and there he became part of the basketball team. He has also served as a boom operator in the US Air Force. At the time, he had already begun to do stand-up comedy. However, he was soon discharged for certain misbehaviors. Since then, he started his career in the entertainment industry.

Sinbad first appeared on Star Search, leading him to be cast on the short-lived sitcom The Redd Foxx Show. He then gained fame for his role in A Different World in 1987, hosting a 1992 episode of Saturday Night Live and working on parts for The Meteor Man and Coneheads. In 1993, he took the lead and starred in The Sinbad Show on the Fox network. He continued doing stand-up comedy, appearing on HBO's Sinbad: Brain Damaged and in Sinbad - Afros and Bellbottoms, at NYC's Paramount Theatre. Other appearances of his include those in the sketch comedy series All That and films like Good Burger, Houseguest, and 1996's Jingle All the Way.

Tragedy struck in 2009, when Sinbad was named as one of the 250 worst tax debtors for the state of California. He then filed for bankruptcy later that year, and was forced to sell his hilltop home. The next year, he found himself as a contestant on the NBC reality competition The Celebrity Apprentice. He was fired on the second episode because he didn't fulfill his tasks as project manager.
