Biography

American actress Shannen Doherty was born on April 12, 1971 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was seven years old, and during the time she immediately announced her intentions to become an actress. Success came early, with her getting roles as early as 1981, when she appeared in episodes of the television series Father Murphy. On the back of that performance, she earned a role in the drama Little House of the Prairie, playing Jenny Wilder from 1982 to 1983. She also got a regular role in the family-oriented series Our House, which premiered in 1986 and ran for two years.

Doherty’s big break, however, came in 1990, and the television series Beverly Hills 90210. She joined the show as Brenda Walsh, the twin of Brandon (Jason Priestley). The series initially revolved around the two, and their struggles with culture shock as the family moved to Beverly Hills. She was the show’s original female lead until 1994, when she left the show for undisclosed reasons; it was reported, however, that she couldn’t get along with many of the show’s other regulars. Her character was thus written out of the story—she pursued an acting career and went to London—but was still mentioned in the show’s later episodes.

Doherty became more popular when she joined the cast of the fantasy series Charmed in 1998. She took on the role of Prue Halliwell, the oldest of three sisters, who discover that they are the “Charmed Ones,” who are tasked to fight the forces of evil. She stayed in the series until the third season, in 2001, because of alleged tensions between her and co-star Alyssa Milano. Her character was killed off, and Rose McGowan was brought in as a replacement, although she continued to hold some rights to the series.

Doherty later appeared on the candid camera show Scare Tactics, a show which she hosted only in its first season. In 2004, she made a return to acting on primetime, starring in the prime time soap North Shore; it only lasted for 21 episodes, however, and was cancelled after derision from critics. In 2006, she hosted yet another reality show, Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty, where she goes around doing the “dirty work” for members of the public. The show was cancelled because of low ratings. She's one of the contestants on the tenth season of Dancing with the Stars.

Quotes

"Let me start by saying it wasn't like I walked out one day and said, 'I quit.' It was a very long process of quitting the show. Aaron got as fed up with me as I was with the show, and I think it was because the notoriety was too much. People were hating the character and I couldn't take the abuse that came with that. People couldn't separate me from her and I got sick of people assuming that I was as naughty and bad as Brenda was. It was all very hurtful." - Cleo Magazine, August 2000

Quotes

[in Cleo magazine, August 2000] Let me start by saying it wasn't like I walked out one day and said, "I quit". It was a very long process of quitting the show. Aaron [producer Aaron Spelling] got as fed up with me as I was with the show, and I think it was because the notoriety was too much. People were hating the character and I couldn't take the abuse that came with that. People couldn't separate me from her and I got sick of people assuming that I was as naughty and bad as Brenda was. It was all very hurtful.

[on the tabloid articles] You know, as far as I'm concerned, whatever they write, um, is so . . . it's consisted of so many different lies that it's not even worth justifying it.

Even when I'm called in for an audition or anything, and even when I have to meet other actors / actresses, or be in front of the camera, I get goosebumps.

[in February 2005] I've been very, very, very happily single since October--I ended my previous relationship, and it thrills me to no end. I'm just sort of hanging out and being a single girl and enjoying the moment. I think to just be a girl and have fun is so incredibly important.
