Born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll on February 2, 1977 and known professionally simply as Shakira, this Colombian singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer and philanthropist is perhaps the most successful crossover performer in the contemporary pop music industry.

Shakira has been a major player on the Latin American pop music scene since the 1990’s a major figure in the pop music scene of Latin America since the mid-1990s. She released her first Spanish-language album, Magia, in 1991, and went on to release the album Peligro in 1993. She began to gain fame in her native Columbia, but was otherwise little known in other countries. Shakira made her third album with Sony Music in 1995, Pies Descalzos, which sold more than a million copies in Brazil. By the time she released her fourth album, Shakira was a fan-favorite among Latin American countries and had begun to gain fans in non-Spanish speaking markets.

In 2001, Shakira released her crossover album in English, Laundry Service. She also became she broke through onto the English-speaking world with the release of Laundry Service, which has sold over thirteen million copies worldwide. The album went triple platinum, and also included four Spanish-language songs. In 2005 Shakira released her Oral Fixation albums, Volume 1 in Spanish and Volume 2 in English. She has headlined many world tours, and is renowned for her dancing styles on stage, which are based on Arabic belly dancing.

Shakira has sold more than 60 million albums to date worldwide, making her the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time. She has also won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, fifteen Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, a People's Choice Award and a Golden Globe nomination. She is the only artist to have two songs in the top ten list of the most successful singles since 1999, and as of 2008 was the sixth most successful artist of the last decade.

-According to BMI, Shakira is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold more than 60 million albums worldwide.

-Shakira is the only artist from South America to reach the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, the Australian ARIA chart, and/or the UK Singles Chart.

-Laundry Service is the best selling album in Turkey.

-Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 holds the record for the highest debut ever for a Spanish language album in the United States (#4 debut having sold 157,000 copies in its first week of release). It is also the first Spanish album to top the German album chart.

-La Tortura holds the record for most weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks, having spent 25 weeks at the top position. She was featured in the Guinness World Records for this accomplishment.

-According to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, "Hips Don't Lie" was the most-played pop song in a single week in American radio history. It was played 9,637 times in one week.

-Shakira became the first artist in the history of the Billboard charts to earn the coveted number one spots on both the Top 40 Mainstream and Latin Chart in the same week doing so with "Hips Don't Lie".

Shakira wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music for two new songs that are featured in the movie Love in the Time of Cholera, based on the acclaimed novel by Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Garcia Marquez himself asked Shakira to write the songs. The songs are called "Pienso en ti", a song from Shakira's breakthrough album Pies Descalzos, "Hay Amores" and "Despedida".
