Sandhurst's Season In Review *NEW*
Interview with Sandhurst 22-year-old Sandhurst Tacama from Tobago was born and raised on the small south Caribbean island. Before his time on Make Me A Supermodel Sandhurst pursued dance. He is a classically trained ballet dancer, with 12 years of ballroom, tap, modern, and African dance under his belt.
However, Sandhurst's close knit Tobagoan community saw more to him than a dancer and he was thrust into the world of modeling by virtually his entire community. Sandhurst Tacama spent his late teen years in Fort Lauderdale, FL before eventually relocating to Philadelphia to major in public relations at Temple University. During Trinidad and Tobago’s inaugural fashion week, he was picked out of a crowd to walk in a runway show, which launched his career.
Sandhurst decided to try his luck by going on the hit Bravo reality series Make Me A Supermodel. There, he became one of 16 contestants to compete for $100,000 and a contract with New York Model Management. Joining the aspiring models is show host Tyson Beckford, who plays mentor along with Nicole Trunfio. Helping out the group is this season’s panel of esteemed judges, including world-renowned designer Catherine Malandrino, model Jenny Shimizu, celebrated photographer Perou and international model scout Marlon.
Though Sandhurst initially struggled with how to use his dancer's grace in a fashionable way, he has been a strong contestant and fan favorite throughout the season. Sandhurst's quirky personality is often displayed in song. He has been heard throughout the season lamenting his "thunder, thunder, thunder thighs" in a catchy little ditty. While Sandhurst struggled to harness his grace and good looks on film, he has excelled on the runway, where the judges have complimented him for his gracefulness, adaptability, and class.
Throughout his time on Make Me A Supermodel Sandhurst has only been in the Bottom 2 once (Episode 11). While his first win did not come until half way through the season and Episode 6, Sandhurst has since won two other weeks, bringing his total wins to three. During the weeks he did not win challenges, Sandhurst has found himself as one of the high scorers six times.
Sandhurst's road to becoming a Supermodel hasn't been easy. He worried scars from a bout of acne as a teenager would keep him from the modeling industry and that his dancer's physique has left him too muscular for the average designer sample sizes. In fact, a number of times during the competition, Sandhurst has struggled with pants that barely fit over his bulging dancer's (self proclaimed "thunder") thighs. A couple of guest judges have expressed concern about Sandhurst's shape and his height.
Based on his consistently strong runway performances and his gaining momentum and confidence, Sandhurst Tacama was named one of the three models to compete in the finale of Make Me A Supermodel. He came in second place, losing the title to Brendon. Still, he managed to launch his career and go traveling, even launching a project called Liming with Sandman on his blog.
