Born in Oban Scotland, Russell Murray is popularly known as Rory McAllister in the wrestling industry. Moving to Ontario, Canada, he met Derek Graham-Couch, better known as his kayfabe cousin on the ring, Robbie McAllister. The two were trained by Waldo Von Erich at the Von Erich/Hart Brothers School of Wrestling. They began working together as Highlanders in South-Western Ontario with promotions such as Pure Wrestling Association and Neo Spirit Pro Wrestling.
In July 2005, the two signed a deal with WWE, and was sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling. A year later, they debuted with a victory over Matt Striker and Rob Conway. They won twice over the same team and were thus put on the fast track to a match for the Spirit Squad's Tag Team Title. They were then set to go up against Spirit Squad members Ken "Kenny" Doane and Michael "Mickey" Brenley, and was soon defeated when the other members interfered.
The Highlanders continued to fight various tag teams until they won a Triple Threat tag team match over Charlie Haas and Viscera (Nelson Frazier, Jr.) and Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch. This made them the number one contenders to the Spirit Squad's title on the September 2, 2006 Raw.
