Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Maxx moved to his grandparents' farm at the age of three. Later, his parents moved again and settled in Memphis, Tennessee. He describes his therapist mother and trucker father as hippies. Maxx took dance lessons but since they lacked funds to pay for it, his mother gave speech therapy to the owner of his dance studio's autistic son. Maxx has grown close to his grandparents, and is still helping them at their farm when he has the time.
Maxx grew up with ADHD and visual perceptual learning difficulties, thus making it harder for him to study at a public school. He stopped schooling by 9th grade when his learning disabilities became unavoidable.
Maxx currently performs in the New Ballet ensemble and a sub-cultural hip hop group in Memphis. Having tumbling and gymnastics experience behind him, he specializes in aerials. He also teaches jazz and hip hop dance, despite being trained when he was already 14 years old. Aside from dancing, he also enjoys writing music and poetry, performing at local clubs, has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and is trained in opera. Maxx is a quiet and reserved person, though he is a real artist driven by his skills in self-expression. His favorite dance styles are hip hop and lyrical, and his favorite performer is Michael Jackson.
Maxx said, "Day to day life gives me a reason to be creative. Different pieces of art and music inspire me to find new and different ways to interpret movement."
Maxx is one of 14 finalists on ABC's Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann.
