Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1969 in Long Island, New York. She was born to Patricia Hickey (an Irish-American) and Alfred Roy Carey (an African-American/Venezuelan). Carey began singing at age three, and went on to attend Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York.
In 1988 Mariah met Columbia Records producer Tommy Mottola, who got a hold of her demo tape and soon after signed her to a recording contract. In 1990, Carey debuted her first album, a self-titled release, which started slow on the charts at #73 but rocketed to #1 within two months of release. The album went multi-platinum and included four consecutive #1 singles for Carey: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday" and "I Don't Wanna Cry." That year, Carey won both Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist at the Grammy Awards.
Carey’s sophomore release, Music Box, came out in 1993 and went platinum ten times over. But she wasn’t done making history: the single “Fantasy” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, a first-ever feat for a female artist in the U.S. The next single, "One Sweet Day," stayed on top of the charts for 16 weeks.
Carey has gone on to release Rainbow (1999), which included her fourteenth number one single, the track “Heartbreaker.” At this point she was the first and only female artist to top the charts every year in the 1990’s, and broke the Beatles’ records for consecutive weeks at #1, with 60. With "Heartbreaker", the first single from her 1999 album Rainbow and also her fourteenth #1 single, she became the only artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and with "Heartbreaker" at its 60th week atop the Billboard's charts, she pushed ahead of The Beatles's 59-week record as the only artist with the most !$#!#ulative weeks spent atop Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. After releasing three more, the single "Don't Forget About Us" off of her 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi was her seventeenth #1 single, tying her with Elvis for the feat. became her 17th #1 single, tying her with Elvis Presley's 17 #1 singles.
In April of 2008, the single "Touch My Body" became Mariah’s eighteenth #1 single, pushing her ahead of Elvis. Carey is infamous for her vocal range and ability to switch between octaves swiftly and beautifully, as well as her unique ability to sing in the whistle register. On April 30, 2008, Mariah married actor Nick Cannon of Nickelodeon fame.
