American actress Maria Canals-Barrera was born on September 28, 1966 in Miami, Florida. She graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in theater, and started acting on stage in different productions in Miami and Los Angeles. Her first recurring television role was on the 1993 television series Key West, and we followed by a minor role in the film Cop and ?, released the same year. She has then made guest appearances in programs such as Viper, Caroline in the City, Murder, She Wrote, The Tony Danza Show and Veronica’s Closet. She often played Hispanic roles, thanks to her Cuban descent.

In 2001, Canals-Barrera had a guest appearance as the prostitute Candy Box in the television series Popular. She also appeared in several episodes of the award-winning miniseries American Family. Younger viewers might also recognize her as the voices of several characters in different superhero-themed animated programs, the first being television reporter Shelly Sandoval in Static Shock. She also provided the voice of Hawkgirl in the animated programs Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited, and the voice of Paulina in Danny Phantom. She also provided the voice for The Proud Family’s Sunset Boulevardez, and for incidental characters in some episodes of The Boondocks.

Canals-Barrera has also appeared in films such as America’s Sweethearts, Bad Boy and The Master of Disguise. Her recent television appearances include guest roles in sitcoms Curb Your Enthusiasm and George Lopez. She also plays the role of Theresa Russo, mother of protagonist Alex Russo (Selena Gomez), in the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place. She most recently appears in the television film Camp Rock, also shown on the Disney Channel; she plays the role of Connie Torres, the mother of singer-wannabe Mitchie (Demi Lovato) who enters the camp as a cook to enable her daughter to join.
