Biography

Born on July 7, 1972 in Gardena, California, Lisa Leslie is four-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time WNBA MVP professional women’s basketball who also holds the distinction of being the first woman to dunk during a WNBA game. Leslie has grown to over six feet tall by the time she reached middle school. She was understandably asked to join the basketball team during the first few weeks of junior high. When she turned 14, she received more than a hundred college recruiting letters, including ones from University of Tennessee and Stanford University. Leslie enrolled in Morningside High School in 1986, where she also joined the volleyball and track and field teams other than the basketball program. During her sophomore year, she led her team to the state championship in 1989, on top of being the leading scorer and rebounder. In 1990, she continued what was Morningside tradition to arrange to have a star player attempt to break the single game scoring record each year. She was able to score 101 points by halftime, but the opponent opted to forfeit. She went on to attend woman’s basketball powerhouse the University of Southern California, where she got her degree in communications. She averaged 20.1 points. In 1996, Leslie was drafted as one of the top picks in the Los Angeles Sparks team. Seven years later, she became the first woman to ever dunk the ball in a WNBA game. She went on to win three MVP titles, two WNBA titles, and two Finals MVP plums.
