Lil' Mama has been involved in poetry and dance since she was young, but pursued a career in music after the encouragement of her father, who owned the record label Familiar Faces. She joined the label in 2006; a year later her first hit, "Lip Gloss", hit the airwaves.
Her debut album, VYP, was released in 2008, and also features her collaboration with Chris Brown and T-Pain, "Shawty Get Loose". Both singles from that album won at the Teen Choice Awards. She has also collaborated with the likes of Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Hudgens; she also contributed to the posthumous album of TLC member Lisa Lopes.
Lil' Mama, however, is best known as one of the judges of the MTV dance series America's Best Dance Crew. She is one of the show's original judges, alongside JC Chasez.
