Biography

Born on July 18, 1980 in Huntington Woods, Michigan, Kristen Bell studied singing and tap dancing during her childhood, before joining drama productions in school and community theaters. She entered the Tisch School of the Arts at the New York University, where she majored in musical theater, although she left a few units shy of graduation to take part in the Broadway production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. She continued appearing in stage plays and in bit roles on films and television, before moving to Los Angeles in 2002. Despite the move, she still had trouble gaining a recurring role in the television shows she appeared on.

Things changed for Bell in 2004, when she appeared in the television movie Gracie’s Choice. She also got her first major film role, playing the kidnapped daughter of the U.S. president in Spartan, alongside Val Kilmer. She later got a guest role in the HBO series Deadwood. She obtained her big break, however, when she was cast as the lead in the television drama Veronica Mars, where she plays a high school student moonlighting as a private investigator with her father. Audiences and critics applauded Bell’s performance, but some lamented her being overlooked for an Emmy nomination. However, she won a Saturn Award in 2005 for her role.

Throughout Veronica Mars’ run, she appeared in other films such as Fifty Pills and Pulse. When the show was cancelled in 2007, she starred in the Judd Apatow-directed comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. She was then given a slot in the cast of the successful television series Heroes. There, she plays Elle Bishop, who has the power to manipulate electricity. It is said that she did not audition for the role, and was instead offered one by the show’s writers. While filming Heroes, she was slated to provide the narration for the hit CW series Gossip Girl.

Bell has also been keeping herself busy with roles in Sheepish, the comedy Serious Moonlight, and the Disney film When in Rome. She has graced the covers and pages of numerous magazines as well, and is known for being a vegetarian and a fan of hockey.

Quotes

Kristen: I like that it's a female heroine, that it's a role model, and I like that it's strong, tough female able to be feminine. When you actually watch it, it's very relatable. Buffy was a female heroine, but she was fighting vampires.

(In In Touch Magazine) Kristen: I'm not a risk taker. I don't do plunging necklines or really short skirts. I try to stay as classy as possible and provide a little mystery.

Kristen: I'm not in the business of becoming famous. And that's the advice I give to younger aspiring actors. Work onstage and do the little roles. In the end it's not important to be seen. It's important to do. There's a lot of disappointment in this business, but my family keeps me grounded.

Kristen tells PARADE magazine (April 30, 2006), Veronica Mars will take the next three years of my life. But I’m green with envy at my pals who are working now on Broadway. I love musicals, and I love singing.

(On publicity from Veronica Mars) Kristen Bell: In the beginning, [the press] was centered a lot around me and the ensemble didn't do much at all. Now, once a month, we do a mall tour where we go to a different city and do a big signing and the whole cast is there. That has a much more ensemble feeling and that takes a lot of the pressure off because you're going as one.

"And who am I? That's one secret I'll never tell.
you know you love me
X.O.X.O. Gossip Girl"
