Joe Block appeared as a member of the cast and a contestant during the second season of the CW reality television series Beauty and the Geek. He is a speed chess champion and was paired with Brittany Knott in the competition, though the two of them were eliminated from the competition during its eighth week. At the time of the show, Block was a grad student who lived in Chicago, Illinois. He was also as a member of the rock band Gnome Attic. He has since focused on more creative endeavors, hoping to make a contribution in the field of arts and philosophy.
