Born John Kennedy Oswald in Akron Ohio, Jani Lane is known for being the lead vocalist of the hard rock band Warrant. He learned to play the guitar at the age of four, since his older brother was an accomplished guitarist. He later played the drums in clubs when he was just 11, and started his career from there. He also played football in college and was offered a number of scholarships, working while studying just to buy his own drum equipment. At the time, he had realized that he wanted to be singing his own songs instead and joined the band Cyren after graduation. He continued to play the drums for bands like Dorian Gray and Plain Jane, and later changed his name to Jani Lane.
Since then, he took up voice lessons with trainer Ron Feldman and debuted at Fern Park Station in Florida. In 1984, Warrant was founded and was approached by recording companies. They signed with Columbia Records to much success.
