Biography

James Pickens Jr. didn't begin acting until he entered Bowling Green State University. While taking up his fine arts degree, he appeared in a handful of school plays. Upon graduation he pursued an acting career, joining the Roundabout Theatre in New York.

In 1986 Pickens moved to Los Angeles to pursue more opportunities, beginning with a role on the daytime soap Another World. He also took the plunge into movies, making his debut in 1986's F/X, and appearing in other minor roles since.

Pickens is best known for his television work, however. He took recurring roles in numerous television shows, notable The Practice, Six Feet Under and The X Files. He joined the cast of the short-lived legal drama Lyon's Den in 2003, and got another regular gig in 2005, when he joined the cast of ABC's Grey's Anatomy.
