Ilan Hall is a New York-based line cook. He grew to love food when he worked at the seafood store Marine Fishery. Later, he was trained at Italy's Lorenzo de Medici Apicus Program and the Culinary Institute of America. He has been cooking professionally for quite a while, and claims that three years of cooking in New York is commensurate to 20 years anywhere else. He exudes a bold persona, being an expert debater and being incredibly talkative.
He became part of the reality cooking contest Top Chef. He claims that his specialty in Spanish cuisine will give him an edge in the competition. He is also one of the youngest contestants in the show.
After winning the title on Top Chef's second season, he opened his first restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. It was called The Gorbals, but was shut down in a week after its opening. According to the county health department, they had an inadequate water heater. Still, it was reopened on October of 2009. The next year, he announced that he was about to be a father. He and his girlfriend are expecting their first child.
