Genevieve Cortese was born in San Francisco on January 8, 1981. She grew up outside the area until she was 13 years old, when her parents decided to move to Whitefish, Montana. Dissatisfied, the family then went on a road trip looking for a variety of ski towns and finally settled in Sun Valley, Idaho. Before making her debut in television, the dark-haired beauty already was a seasoned actress on stage. She has appeared in regional stage productions such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Crimes of the Heart, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. On top of these, she has a drama and an English degree from New York University's Tisch School of Arts. There, she attended the Stella Adler Acting Studio and Atlantic Theater Co.
Cortese made her television debut when she was cast as Kris Furillo on the series Wildfire. Her character is that of a young horse jockey who has done time in a juvenile detention center for stealing an automobile. While working on horses in the correctional facility, she was spotted by horser trainer Pablo Betart and offered her a job training horses at Raintree Farm. Determined to put her troubled past behind her, she dedicated herself fully to the world of horse racing.
Genevieve Cortese has also been seen on Mojave in 2004, and on an episode of The Dead Zone in 2005. This was followed by roles in Kids in America, Bickford Shmeckler’s Cool Ideas, and the 2006 film Life is Short. Despite all these, she gained the most popularity when she booked the role of the demon Ruby on the fourth season of Supernatural. The character was initially played by actress Katie Cassidy, but budgetary reasons kept her from reprising the role. Cortese found it strange stepping into the shoes of Cassidy’s character, pointing out the conflicts of the demon’s origins and her present existence.
