Biography

Born on May 6, 1983 in Brooklyn, New York, Gabourey Sibide is an actress best known for her breakthrough Oscar-nominated role in the 2009 film Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire. The daughter of an African-American R&B and gospel singer and a Senegal-born cab driver, she attended Borough of Manhattan Community College, City College of New York and Mercy College. In 2009, Sibiden achieved mainstream popularity when she played obese, sixteen-year-old Precious in the Oscar-winning movie Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire. Her next project was Yelling to the Sky, a Sundance Lab project where she played a bully opposite Zoe Kravitz. In December of 2009, she hosted Saturday Night Live. In 2010, she was cast as a precocious student on the Showtime series The Big C.
