Canadian actress Fran?oise Yip was born on September 4, 1972 in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Initially inclined towards music, she was trained to play the piano as a young child, and eventually won several competitions with her performances. However, her career would take a shift when she was studying at university; she decided to become a model, and despite early success, she moved on to acting.
Yip, who is part-Chinese, first made a name for herself in Hong Kong. Her early film appearances, in Black Mask and Rumble in the Bronx, earned her fame in the former British colony; her performance in the latter even earned her two nominations from the Hong Kong Film Awards the following year. After spending the first five years of her career in the Hong Kong film industry, she flew back to her home country, and accepted offers from Canadian and American projects. Her films during the time include Romeo Must Die, Lunch with Charles and The Pledge; she was also a regular in television shows Freedom and Flatland, and in the miniseries RoboCop: Prime Detectives.
Yip also had a recurring role in the third season of Smallville, and had notable guest roles on Andromeda, Jeremiah, Men in Trees, and the one-off drama A Beachcombers Christmas, where she earned a Leo Award nomination in 2005. In 2007, she became a regular on the fantasy series Blood Ties, playing detective Kate Lam, who keeps her feelings for her colleague Mike Celluci (Dylan Neal) but finds herself counseling him over his love for Vicki Nelson (Christina Cox).
