Biography

Born on June 23, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois, Frances Mcdormand is an Academy Award-winning film, stage and television actress best known for her roles in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, North Country, Almost Famous, and Fargo, where she won an Oscar and Screen Actors Guild award for best actress in 1996.  Born to Canadian parents, a retired nurse and a pastor, McDormand was adopted, her biological mother perhaps one of the parishioners at her father’s church.  Since her father was tasked to restore congregations, her family moved around a lot, from Illinois to Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, before finally settling in the town of Monessen in Pennsylvania.  She graduated high school in 1975 and Bethany College in West Virginia where she majored in theater.  She went on to earn her masters degree from Yale University, after becoming roommates with Holly Hunter at one point.  Her first professional acting job was in Trinidad and Tobago in a play written by Derek Walcott, a poet.

McDormand made her film debut in the 1984 movie Blood Simple.  Along with her early film roles, she landed minor parts in several television series, such as in the police drama Hill Street Blues.  In 1988, meanwhile, she was in a stage of production of A Streetcar Named Desire, a performance which was good enough for a Tony Award nomination.  She is a member of the experimental theater group The Wooster Group.

Frances McDormand would go on to bag four Academy Award nominations, starting with Mississippi Burning in 1988 and Almost Famous in 2000.  She would be named Best Actress for her role as a police chief in Fargo in 1996.  She would receive her third nomination for North Country for Best Supporting Actress, losing eventually to Rachel Weisz.  She also appeared in the dark comedy Friends with Money, with Jennifer Aniston and Joan Cusack, as well as in a Simpson episode.
