Professional wrestler and road agent David Edward Finlay, Jr. was born on January 31, 1959 in Belfast, Northern Island. Under the ring name Finlay, he wrestles on the ECW brand of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Also, he is a third-generation pro wrestler.
Finlay’s first match was in Glynn, for his father’s promotion in 1974. He filled in for a wrestler who didn’t arrive, leading Finlay to wrestle on a full-time basis throughout Ireland. After four years, he moved to England and wrestled under various companies under the banner Joint Promotions. His first title was as the Joint Promotions British Heavy Middleweight, which he earned in 1982. After trading the title back and forth with Marty Jones, he eventually went on to win a major British title, All-Star's British Heavyweight Championship. He then competed on ITV’s World of Sport program. Finlay continued his career by wrestling in other countries, some of them being Japan, Germany and Austria.
In 1995, Finlay made his debut on World Championship Wrestling as the Belfast Bruiser. He sported an eye patch for several months, due to an eye injury in an infamous parking lot match against Lord Steven Regal. He went on a hiatus, dismissed the Bruiser persona, and started out once more as Fit Finlay.
Before the WWE, Finlay began working on a comeback in 2004. He came up with a gimmick concerning a proud native Irishman who enjoys nothing more than a brawl. On January 20, 2006, Finlay appeared in his first WWE match in SmackDown, against Matt Hardy. He lost, and later established himself as a heel before being nicknamed “The Fighting Irish Bastard.” He continued to get involved in intense feuds, later competing in WrestleMania 22.
It was in 2008 that Finlay was drafted to the ECW brand, where he joined Hornswoggle in challenging The Miz and Morrison for the WWE tag team Championship. Finlay was even more recognized the next year, when he became the first person to successfully defeat ECW champ Jack Swagger.
