Erik King graduated from Morehouse College. He began acting in the mid-1980s, later appearing in films such as Burn Hollywood Burn and True Crime. He also appeared in shows such as Missing Persons and the short-lived Kindred: The Embraced. In 2000, he held a recurring role on the HBO series Oz, but gained wider prominence through his role as Sgt. Doakes on the Showtime series Dexter.
