Biography

Debra Jo Rupp is an American television and film actress, who is best known for her role as Kitty Forman on the comedy series That 70s Show. Born on February 24, 1951 in Glendale, California, Rupp was raised in Massachusetts and attended Msconomet Regional High School in Boxford, Massachusetts. She graduated from the University of Rochester in New York in 1974 with a bachelor in arts degree.

In 1979, Rupp left her native state to pursue acting professionally in New York. She landed a lot of roles right off the bat, bagging her first television role a year later in 1980 as topless dancer Shelia on the daytime drama All My Children. This was on top of the stage performances and commercials. She also played the wife of a cheating husband in a one-act comedy Second Verse, which was staged at New York’s Nat Home Theater. Another noteworthy performance was as young bride Eleanor in the 1985 production of The Middle Ages at the Whole Theater Company in New Jersey. Not long, she had become well-known among the New York theater circuit. Her other credits include Terrence McNally’s Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune and Cynthia Heimel’s A Girl’s Guide to Chaos. This character is said to be bear striking similarity to Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw.

Rupp made the transition to the small screen with a recurring role as Ms. Higgins on the series David Rules with Randy Quaid. This was followed by roles on Blossom, Family Matters, LA Law, ER, and the television movie A Woman Scorned. She was also on an episode of Seinfeld and Friends. She also appeared in the 1996 comedy Sgt. Bilko and the cult hit Clockwatchers. Perhaps her most famous role, however, was as Kitty Foreman on the comedy series That 70s Show. While doing some work on movies and television, she would always go back to theater from time to time.

When the series ended in 2006, Rupp achieved more serious roles on Law & Order: SVU and on the daytime drama As the World Turns. After another run in the theater, she was cast in the ABC sitcom Better with You as matriarch Vicky Putney.
