David Cross is an Emmy Award-winning writer and comedian who was born on April 4, 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia. He previously studied at Emerson College in Massachusetts, yet dropped out in order to pursue a career as a stand-up comic, performing together with several comedy troupes in Boston. Cross began working in television by writing for The Ben Stiller Show. Other TV shows he has had roles in are The Drew Carey Show, Just Shoot Me, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force
. He has also worked on feature films such as The Cable Guy, Men in Black 2, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Russ Lieber is portrayed by David Cross in the Comedy Central television series The Colbert Report. He is Stephen Colbert’s mortal enemy for his liberal views, and is a satirical radio talk show host who hails from Madison, Wisconsin with a Jewish family background. Lieber is very picky about being politically correct, and he often worries that what he says might be misconstrued as offensive. He appears on Colbert’s show to participate in debates, trading barbs with the anchorman and generally getting under each other’s skin. Lieber appears to be a parody of Al Franken, just as Colbert is a parody of Bill O’Reilly.
