Biography

Dave Matthews is a Grammy Award-winning singer and musician born on January 9, 1967 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Known to be the lead vocalist and guitarist of The Dave Matthews Band, he has also worked as a solo artist and film actor. He graduated from St Stithians College. His family moved frequently, leading him to be part of the Charlottesville, Virginia music scene. There, he also acted in various local stage productions. Though he preferred not to perform in public, he was goaded by local star Tim Reynolds to perform with him, and he stunned the audience with his performance. His first music gig became a modern dance performance by the Miki Liszt Dance Company. In 1990, he decided to launch his own band.

Dave Matthews then formed The Dave Matthews Band the next year, having its first show on April 20, 1991 during an Earth Day Festival in Virginia. In 2000, he helped found the ATO Records label with the band’s manager, Coran Crapshaw. Dave Matthews’ 2003 solo album, “Some Devil” was released, and its single “Gravedigger” won a Grammy award the following year.

Also developing his interest in acting, Dave Matthews has appeared on four feature films. He does not only provide soundtracks for movies, but portrays various characters in them as well. In 2003, he was cast in the adaptation of Where the Red Fern Grows. He is also credited for playing Otis in the 2005 film Because of Winn-Dixie, starring Jeff Daniels and AnnaSophia Robb. He has also portrayed a homosexual salesman in the 2007 comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, where he was cast alongside Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Jessica Biel. He appeared in another Adam Sandler movie, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan in 2008. One of his television roles was as Patrick Obyedkov in three episodes of the series House M.D.
