Date Of Birth

April 12, 1979

Born on April 12, 1979 in New York City, New York, Claire Danes is a film, television, and theater actress known for her role in Romeo + Juliet, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and Stardust. The daughter of a day-care provider and a computer consultant, Danes' grandfather was the dean of the art and architecture school at Yale University. She attended the Dalton School, the New York City Lab School for Collaborative Studies, the Professional performing Arts School, and eventually Yale University as a psychology major. She dropped out on her second year to focus on her film career.

Claire Danes' foray in the entertainment industry started off with the television drama series My So-Called Life, which won a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination. Her film credits include the 1994 adaptation of Little Women, Home for the Holidays, and starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1996 version of the Shakespeare classic William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. In the same year, she turned down the female lead in what would be the biggest movie of all time, Titanic. She also took the lead in Brokedown Palace, alongside Kate Beckinsale and Bill Pullman. Danes' other film credits include Igby Goes Down, The Hours, Stage Beauty, Shopgirl, and The Family Stone.

Danes had also appeared in Off-Broadway plays such as Happiness, Punk Ballet, and Kids On Stage, where she choreographed her own solo dance. She auditioned for the role of Lois Lane in Superman Returns but the role went to Kate Bosworth. She made her Broadway debut in 2007 in the revival of Pygmalion.

After filming Brokedown Palace in Manila, Philippines in 1998, Claire Danes was caught in a controversy when she was quoted as calling the capital “ghastly and weird.” As a result, her film was banned from screening in the Philippines and Danes was declared persona non grata. She later issued an apology.
Her later work included roles in Me and Orson Welles co-starring Zac Efron, and the TV movie Temple Grandin. She was then cast in the Showtime series Homeland in 2011.
