Biography

Born on February 12, 1980 in Santa Monica, California, Christina Ricci is a former child actress best known for portraying Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family. Making the transition to teenage then adult actress, she has starred in such films as Sleepy Hollow in 1999, Monster in 2004, and Speed Racer in 2008.

The daughter of a former Ford model and a lawyer-psychiatrist, Christina Ricci grew up in Santa Monica to a reasonably affluent lifestyle. As a child, she would hear the screams through the vents in her room, courtesy of the shrieking therapy her father used to specialize in. The family eventually moved to Montclair, New Jersey, where Ricci ended up attending Edgemont Elementary School, Glenfield Middle School, and Montclair High School. After one year at MHS, she moved to a private school in New York City called the Professional Children’s School, where Sarah Michelle Gellar and Macaulay Culkin also went. She had self-esteem problems as a teenager, especially after her parents’ divorce in 1993. She reportedly had the habit of cutting herself.

Christina Ricci started out in commercials as early as six years old, until landing her first film role in Mermaids in 1990, alongside Cher and Winona Ryder. She landed the role of Wednesday Addams in the hit film adaptation of The Addams Family in 1991 then again in the sequel The Addams Family Values in 1993. Her dark and precocious portrayal of Wednesday earned her even more roles, such as in Casper, a huge box office hit, Now and Then, a coming-of-age film, and teenage films like Golddiggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain and That Darn Cat.

By the late 1990s, Ricci began making the transition to more adult roles, starting off with Ang lee’s The Ice Storm, independent hit Buffalo ’66, and The Opposite of Sex, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She also appeared alongside Charlize Theron in Monster. Soon, she appeared on television series like Grey’s Anatomy and Saturday Night Live. She was soon starring on films like Black Snake Moan and rose to even more fame for playing the lead in the 2006 movie Penelope. She was also on Speed Racer, and the TNT drama Saving Grace. In 2010, she appeared in the psychological thriller After.Life and booked the lead role on the series Pan Am in 2011. She also made her Broadway Debut in the production of Time Stands Still.
