Biography

Canadian film and television actor Callum Keith Rennie was born on September 14, 1960 in England. When he was four years of age, he moved to Canada with his Scottish parents, and was raised in Alberta with his two brothers. He began his career on stage, but worked in university radio during his teens. At 25 years old, he discovered his passion for acting after a rough struggle with alcoholism and an altercation in a Vancouver bar.

Callum Keith Rennie performed for the first time at the A.B.O.P. Theatre in Edmonton, getting a role in the stage adaptation of Kafka’s novel, titled Amerika. This was followed by a part in American Buffalo for the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, which brought the actor critical acclaim. Rennie then attended Bruhanski Theatre Studio in Vancouver, where he received his first professional theatrical role. This was in the Sally Clark’s Lost Souls and Missing Persons, which earned him an invitation to work at the Shaw Festival. There, he was cast in Man and Superman, and Pinero’s Trelawney of the Wells.

Since then, Rennie moved on to work on the small screen, landing spots on several Canadian TV series. He was seen on Twitch City, Da Vinci’s Inquest, and Due South. Other shows he appeared in include Mutant X, The Outer Limits and Tru Calling, as well as numerous movies. Rennie got roles in Double Happiness, Hard Core Logo, Memento, and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. In 2004, Rennie became known in a recurring role as the Cylon, Leoben Conoy, on the reimagined series Battlestar Galactica. He then became a guest star in La Femme Nikita, The X Files, Smallville, Supernatural, The L Word, and Californication. He has also landed roles in films like Sleepwalking, Silk, and The Butterfly Effect.

Rennie is also the recipient of the 1997 Gemini Award for Best Performance in a Children’s or Youth Program or Series, due to his performance in My Life as a Dog. Two years later, he won the Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in Last Night. Other awards of his include a Leo Award for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Feature Length Drama, in 2001 for Suspicious River and in 2007 for Unnatural & Accidental. For his performance in Flower & Garnet, Rennie won the Best Actor in a Canadian Film award from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle, and another Leo Award for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Feature Length Drama.

Other roles of his include those in Gunless and the AMC series The Killing. He also landed guest spots in shows like Rookie Blue, CSI: Miami and Alphas. In 2011, he was cast in the NBC series The Firm, based on the John Grisham novel and sequel to the 1993 film starring Tom Cruise.
