Bret McKenzie was born Bret Peter Tarrant McKenzie on June 29, 1976 in New Zealand. He is the son of Peter McKenzie, who played Elendil in the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Bret himself, also got cast as an elf escort in the third installment, The Return of the King. He is one half of the Kiwi folk comedy duo, Flight of the Conchords (FOTC), along with fellow New Zealander, Jermaine Clement. Formed in 1998 as a means to improving their limited guitar skills, FOTC has since received several citations from the International Comedy circuit. They received a nomination for the Perrier Award at the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, won "Best Newcomer" at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and "Best Alternative Comedy Act" at the 2005 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. They have an award-winning BBC Radio series, released a live comedy album, "Folk the World," and are currently recording a new comedy album for Sub Pop Records.
