Beth Phoenix debuted in 2006 as an ally of Trish Stratus’ against then-psycho Mickie James but in just her second televised WWE match Phoenix fractured her mandible. She needed to have a titanium plate and new screws installed in her jaw and wasn’t seen again in the WWE for over a year.
Phoenix returned as a female super villain, dominating and unrelenting but still beautiful and feminine. She called herself The Glamazon. On one episode of RAW she took out Mickie James, Jillian Hall and Candice Michelle single handedly. Phoenix became the number one contender for the WWE Women’s Championship and took the title after a series of matches with Candice Michelle. She accidentally broke Candice’s collar bone after knocking her off the top rope. Phoenix feuded with number one contender Mickie James, always getting the best of her. At Wrestlemania XXIV Phoenix continued her dominance as she teamed with Melina in a win against Maria and Ashley Massaro.
On a July episode of RAW, Santino Marella issued an open challenge to any superstar in the back and Phoenix answered by soundly defeating him. Phoenix confronted him a week later and they shared an unexpected kiss. They became an inseparable couple known collectively as Glamorella, a combination of The Glamazon and Marella. She typically acted as the serious one of the couple, keeping Santino Marella in line and refusing to laugh at his jokes. But they remained together and were later joined by a fan, Rosa Mendes, to form an offensive trio in a feud against Melina. Phoenix also won the Slammy for 2008 Diva of the Year.
The performer, formerly Elizabeth Kocanski, now Mrs. Elizabeth Carolan by marriage, was born November 24, 1980. She grew up in Elmira, New York, and when she was eleven she received tickets to a WWF television taping as the prize for winning a coloring contest. She credit’s her prize as being the moment she fell in love with wrestling. Carolan competed on the Notre Dame High School scholastic wrestling team, the first female varsity wrestler in school history. She won her weight class at the New York State Fair, became the Northeast freestyle women’s champion and she was a member of an association called USA Wrestling. Her goal was always to become a professional wrestler and she believed having a solid amateur background would help her get that. Carolan is married to Canadian wrestler Joey Carolan, also known as Joey Knight of the tag team the All Knighters. He was her trainer when she first went to wrestling school in Buffalo, New York. Joey Knight is best remembered in the WWE as one of the men Donald Trump hired to shave Vince McMahon’s head at Wrestlemania 23. Phoenix competed for three years in the WWE developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling before being called up to the big leagues.
