Biography

Barry Pepper is a Canadian-born actor best known for his role in the 1998 war film Saving Private Ryan. Coming from a family or travelers, Barry Pepper was born on April 4, 1970 in Campbell River, British Columbia. He spent most of his childhood traveling the world in their homemade ship. Because of this kind of lifestyle, he completed his studies in both public schools and correspondence courses. After sailing in the South Pacific Islands for five years, his family came back to their native Canada, where his parents set up a shop on a small island off the West Coast. He attended George P. Varier High School in Courtenay, where he became greatly interested in arts and excelled as an athlete. In college, he studied marketing and graphic design but decided to change his course after his joining the Vancouver Actors Studio.

Barry Pepper became one of the most sought after young actor in Hollywood for his remarkable portrayal of the religious sniper, Private Daniel Jackson, in Saving Private Ryan. He also played Dean Stanton in the 1999 Academy Award-nominated drama film The Green Mile. Barry Pepper also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers released in 2005. Barry Pepper is also known for his role as the journalist Joseph L. Galloway in We Were soldiers, for his lead role in Battlefield Earth and his portrayal of Roger Maris in the HBO film 61* directed by Billy Crystal. He also played as Dale Earnhardt the ESPN movie 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story.

Pepper also appeared in the movie, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, which marked Tommy Lee Jones’ directorial debut. He also produced and starred in the gripping film, The Snow Walker, released in Toronto in 2003. The film earned him a Best Actor nomination for the 24th Annual Genie Awards in Canada. Pepper also had a starring role in Spike Lee’s 25th Hour. He also co-starred with John Malkovich, Dennis Hopper and Vin Diesel in Knockaround Guys.
