Auckland, New Zealand-native Antonio Te Maioha grew up in Hastings with his family. His father is of Maori heritage, having both Ngapuhi and Waikato tribal affiliations. As a child, he developed a passion for the theatre arts. He graduated from the Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School and worked on several stage productions afterwards. He was seen on Te Rakau Hau O Te Wao Tapu in 1994 and on Waiora, which also toured Hawaii and the UK from 1996-1999.
One of Antonio Te Maioha's first onscreen roles was that of Boraxis/Dimuzi on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. He followed it up with a part in Xena: Warrior Princess, and later on Mataku in 2005. He tn got the role of Robbo McVinnie on Orange Roughies, and became known for playing Buddy Haanui on Shortland Street. He also appeared on the short film Taua and the series Legend of the Seeker. In 2010, he was cast as Barca on the Starz Network series Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
