Ian Hart was born October 8, 1964 in Liverpool, England. He attended Cardinal Allen Grammar School and studied drama at the now defunct Mabel Fletcher College of Music and Drama. He took up a course in video production at South Mersey College.
He gained recognition when he played John Lennon in the two films Backbeat and The Hours and Times. His work in Backbeat earned him a Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Evening Standard British Film Awards and a British Newcomer of the Year Award at the London Critics Circle Film Awards. In 1995, he won the Venice Film Festival's Best Supporting Actor award for playing Ginger on Nothing Personal and in 2000, he was named Karlovy Vary International Film Festival's Best Actor for playing Clive on Aberdeen. He was also Tribeca Film Festival's Best Actor for his role as Brian Keenan on Blind Flight.
Among Ian Hart's most notable films are The End of the Affair, Enemy of the State, Robinson Crusoe, Liam, Killing Me Softly and Finding Neverland. Hart was also Professor Quirrell in the 2001 fantasy Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. On TV, he played Dr. John Watson on The Hound of Baskervilles and on Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking. He was William Cecil - Lord Brughley on the miniseries The Virgin Queen, Ludwig van Beethoven on Eroica, William Harrison on Longitude and he also narrated theanimated short film Dad's Dead.
Hart was featured on magazines Mojo, The Big Issue Cymru, NME, Empire, Total Film, International Herald Tribune and T2. He is married to wife Lynne and has two daughters named Daisy and Holly.
