Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) is an architect and professor at Columbia University in New York City on the television series, "How I Met Your Mother." Ted lives in the year 2030, and tells the story of his earlier life in the 2010s to his two children. Ted had been on a search for his true love and in the process met many very different women. Ted relies heavily on his friends Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), and Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). He has been friends with Marshall and Lily since their days in college. Robin once dated Ted and after their break up, they remained friends. Barney considers Ted to be his "bro" and in Ted's past acted as a wingman when Ted was seeking women to date.
Ted's relationship with Robin started when they met in his favorite bar, McLaren's, while Ted was out drinking with Marshall and Lily. On their first date, Ted noticed a blue french horn on the wall of the restaurant and he stole it for Robin as a gesture of his affection. Later, that same night, Ted told Robin that he loved her. Robin decided to not pursue the relationship, because Ted was moving too quickly and she ended the romance. They remained friends and a few years later rekindled their relationship.
Ted briefly dated a number of women with nothing working out until he met Victoria at a wedding where she was working as a baker. They dated for several months, until Victoria moved to pursue a fellowship abroad. The two attempted a long distance relationship, but it did not work for them and they called it quits.
Ted was given a promotion at work and soon after met a woman named Stella. She was a dermatologist who helped Ted with removing an unwanted tattoo that was a result of Ted being intoxicated and his desire to impress a young woman. Until she met Ted, Stella had not dated or been with a man since she broke up with her husband, Tony (Jason Jones). Ted proposed to Stella who was initially hesitant, but eventually accepted his proposal. On their wedding day, Stella left Ted at the altar after she realized that she still had feelings for her ex-husband Tony.
After Stella left him at the altar, Ted was very depressed. He eventually recovered with the help of his friends and started to date again. Tony felt bad about taking Stella away and tried to offer Ted something to ease his own guilty conscience. He offered him a professorship at Columbia University and Ted eventually accepted. Tony went on to write a movie about the incident called "The Wedding Bride" which painted Ted as the bad guy.
"Tonight, I'm gonna go up to the roof, I'm gonna have a few beers, I'm gonna wait for the slutty pumpkin. It's just what I do."
"She wants casual... OK. I'll be casual, I'm gonna be a mushroom cloud of casual!"
"I just met the perfect woman. She's funny, she's beautiful, she loves 'Star Wars'..."
"And I could design those museums. But instead, what am I designing? What has my career led to? A two-story Stetson with outdoor dining on the brim."
