Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) is the husband of Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan) and the best friend of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) on the television series, "How I Met Your Mother." Marshall and Ted were roommates in college and initially did not care much for each other. It took a road trip halfway across the country for them to finally bond and become best friends. Marshall also met Lily as a freshman at Wesleyan. They both lived on the same floor in their dorm.
Marshall and Lily have been together since their first year in college. They have both only slept with each other and consider this to be a badge of honor. Ted and Barney occasionally make fun of Marshall for it, but he is happy with his choice. When Marshall is introduced on the show, he is about to propose to Lily. Having been together for many years already, she accepts his proposal. They don't have immediate plans to get married, but expect it to happen sometime in the next year or two.
Lily becomes enthralled with the idea of being an artist and decides she wants to go to an art school in San Francisco but Marshall does not want her to go. She leaves anyway, breaking up with Marshall in the process. Marshall is devastated by this and can barely get out of bed the entire summer she is gone. He finally starts to get back to normal when his friends help him begin to move on. When he starts looking for women to date, Barney keeps stealing his dates. It is later discovered that Barney was preventing Marshall from moving on from Lily as he found their relationship to be inspirational.
Marshall started out as a student at the Columbia University School of Law with the intent of going into environmental law and working for the Natural Resources Defense Council. When he graduated, he was offered a position at the NRDC, but also with a law firm that could pay him considerably more money. He decided to go with the big law firm after they told him his only client would be an amusement park that he loved. That law firm fell into trouble and the partners were all arrested. Marshall was out of work when Barney offered to get him a job at Goliath National Bank. He took Barney up on the offer and is currently working for the bank.
"Which would you rather make out with? Classic mermaid, top half human, bottom half fish; or inverted mermaid, top half fish, bottom half human?"
"Because the slap has done what I'd hoped. It's brought us all closer together. And it's caused us to recognize both the frailty and the greatness in ourselves and each other."
"Maybe she was a ghost. That's why she didn't want to kiss you because you passed right through her and get really cold for a second. Oh my God, I just had a great idea for a screenplay."
