Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) is one of the best friends of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and a suit-wearing Goliath National Bank executive on the television series, "How I Met Your Mother." Barney is a perpetually single womanizer who will go to outlandish lengths to get a woman into bed with him.
The exact nature of Barney's job is never specified, but at various times he is seen holding a meeting with North Korean military officials, stating that if he wasn't so good at lying about his work he would be in jail for perjury. He has also seen his company attacked by ninjas. The implication is that he has been involved in shady dealings. Barney also gets Marshall (Jason Segel) a job at Goliath National Bank as a lawyer.
Though his work and personal life may suggest otherwise, Barney does have a soft spot for true love. This is shown through his admiration for Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall's relationship, even though he makes fun of Marshall for only having slept with one woman. When Lily broke up with Marshall, Barney kept stealing women from him to make sure he didn't move on from Lily. He also went to San Francisco to convince her to come back and then made her swear to never tell anyone. She kept the secret until just before her wedding to Marshall. After this was discovered, Marshall made Barney his co-best man along with Ted.
Barney is willing to accept nearly every challenge put to him when it comes to sleeping with women. Even suggestions, rather than challenges, are accepted. Such as trying to get a woman to sleep with him while dressed as an 80-year old man, while wearing overalls, or dressed in scuba gear. When Barney was a child he was mocked by a classmate who said he had slept with 100 women. Barney told him he would sleep with 200. Eventually, he did. After that he no longer had the continuous drive to sleep with women, and began to look for something more, particularly with his friend, Robin (Cobie Smulders).
Barney's mother was rather promiscuous and he grew up not knowing who his father was. His mother told him that Bob Barker was his father, so he managed to get on The Price Is Right and win just to meet him and tell him he was his son. He didn't do it, because deep down he knew that Barker was not his real father.
Barney began a relationship with Robin after some allusion to his attraction to her for some time. She initially was reluctant to make it work with him and told him she loved him just to get him to back off. They managed to work it out and date for several months. However, they decided that they would be better off as friends and have remained so since then.
